Through a lifetime of simple lessons and quiet example, a father teaches his child that true wisdom is not knowledge, success, or status—it is humility, character, attentiveness, and the courage to remain teachable. Years later, those lessons still serve as a compass through life's most difficult roads.

Khun-Anup, Ma’at, and an Inheritance of Justice My father said it over and over again: Don't let anybody tell you your story began with slavery. You were enslaved. There is a world of difference between those two sentences. One describes something somebody did to you. The other tries to make what they did who you are. So pull the timeline backward until the chains fall off. Go beyond America, beyond Europe, beyond Rome and Greece, and follow the Nile into ancient Africa, wher

A Reflection from the People Who Made Me I come to this page carrying two inheritances: the mind of a father who made hard truths plain, and the living love of a mother whose arms have always known how to gather me whole. Between Asa’s lesson and Patsy Jo’s heartbeat, their baby SUN received a map without knowing it, a way through the dark places that would misname him, and a way back whenever the world made him strange to himself. The lesson began with a sheepdog who believ

When a Black man insists Africa has nothing to do with him, his ancestry is put on trial. What follows is a powerful examination of stolen history, inherited identity, and the evidence slavery could not erase. In the end, the most convincing witness is the face in the mirror.

What if he doesn't see a brother? My father said something once that changed the way I understood the Bloods and the Crips. We keep asking how you get them to stop killing each other. We say, How can you kill your own brother? But my father was asking me to consider something I had never considered: What if he doesn't see a brother? I had to sit with that. Because I thought we were all looking at the same thing. Two Black boys. Surely they know there is something between the

There is a moment in every life that no one announces. It doesn't arrive with applause, certainty, or a feeling that everything has finally fallen into place. In fact, you may not recognize it until years later. It is the quiet day when you stop asking life to tell you who you are, because your choices have already begun answering for you. You notice that you no longer admire people for how brightly they shine, but for how gently they make other people feel seen. You begin to

My Baby Girl, When you were little, you thought growing up meant learning the answers. So did I. School rewarded them. Courtrooms demanded them. but LIFE... asked something different. The older I get, the less life asks me what I know, and the more it asks, Who AM I now? That surprised me. I spent years trying to become a successful man. I never realized life was trying to help me become a good one. Some questions can be answered in a sentence. Others must be answered by the

Some of our earliest stories are not memories at all. They are gifts carried to us by the people who loved us before we knew their names or our own. This is one of mine. Perhaps, in some small way, it is one of yours too.

You Are Not Late is a father’s promise to love his daughter without rushing her becoming. As Asa Pearl approaches sixteen, he begins to understand that parenting is not the work of shaping a child into his dreams, but of standing close enough to protect her and far enough away for her to discover herself. It is a poem about purposeful transformation, trust, and the courage to give a child room to arrive in her own time.

While staring at the only photograph he has of his great-great-grandparents, Hakim imagines being granted five minutes with the people whose courage, faith, and choices made his life possible. What begins as a conversation about a family name becomes a meditation on legacy, fatherhood, and the quiet inheritance that passes from one generation to the next.

Ma, Today I have come to you because of a question. Not my question. Kelvin's. He came to me with the kind of question only a true friend with a healing spirit might comfortably pose. Not as a criticism, but as an invitation to discover something about myself that had been standing quietly beside me all along. He said "Hakim... I love your stories. I feel like I know your father better, your sisters and your your brother, even Asa Pearl. But they keep asking..." "Why doesn't

Daddy..." Yes, Baby Girl? How do you know when you're doing it right?" I don't. Every morning, I wake up holding two fears. One, that I will love you so fiercely I protect you from the very struggles that would have made you strong. The other, that I mistake hardship for wisdom and forget that children grow best where they are deeply loved. So I make myself one promise. I will not raise you to need me. I will raise you to recognize yourself. I will teach you that ki

When music fills the room, a little girl hears something deeper than a song. As she dances without self-consciousness or fear, her father witnesses a sacred connection to joy, memory, and the generations who came before her.
