The Question

My Baby Girl,
When you were little,
you thought growing up meant learning the answers.
So did I.
School rewarded them.
Courtrooms demanded them.
but LIFE...
asked something different.
The older I get,
the less life asks me what I know,
and the more it asks,
Who AM I now?
That surprised me.
I spent years trying to become a successful man.
I never realized
life was trying to help me become a good one.
Some questions can be answered in a sentence.
Others must be answered by the way you live.
So don't worry about knowing everything.
Instead,
focus on finding the ONE question worthy of your life.
Ask yourself,
Am I becoming more kind...
or just more accomplished?
Am I becoming more honest...
or just more convincing?
Am I becoming someone I would trust...
when no one is watching?
Those questions will take you farther than any degree,
any title,
or any applause.
One day,
you'll discover
the question was never trying to test you.
It was trying
to introduce you
to yourself.
Love, Dad
